Omid Popalzay Bids Farewell to PSIM Yogyakarta After Securing Promotion to Liga 1
PSIM Yogyakarta is set to part ways with one of its key foreign players, Omid Popalzay, ahead of the 2025-26 Liga 1 season. The 29-year-old Afghan midfielder played an instrumental role in helping the club secure promotion after two decades in Liga 2. Despite expectations from club management to retain him for the top-tier campaign, Popalzay chose to leave, marking the end of his short but impactful tenure with Laskar Mataram.

Popalzay initially joined PSIM during the second half of the 2024-25 Liga 2 season, filling the gap left by Brazilian striker Pedrinho. Throughout ten appearances, he clocked 730 minutes of play and contributed one goal. His influence on the field extended beyond stats, consistently becoming a vital figure in the attacking setup and helping lead the team to a league title and eventual promotion.

His departure comes as a surprise, especially after earlier statements from the club indicating their intention to keep him alongside other foreign players. Nonetheless, Popalzay officially announced his exit through social media, expressing gratitude for his time at PSIM and the support from fans. His emotional farewell hints at a deep connection with the club despite the relatively short stint.

Before his journey in Indonesia, Popalzay had a diverse international career, playing in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, Poland, Bangladesh, Sweden, and Lebanon. His past clubs include notable names like Achilles '29, Adelaide Comets, Ariana FC, and Nejmeh SC. Known for his creative playmaking and versatility, his exit leaves a notable gap in PSIM’s squad as they prepare for the challenges of Liga 1.
