Chelsea Leads Premier League in Guard of Honour Tradition
Chelsea has earned a reputation in the Premier League for awarding the most guards of honour to rival teams. This tradition, where players form two lines to applaud the league champions as they enter the pitch, has been embraced by the Blues on several occasions. In the past, Chelsea honored Manchester City in 2020 and 2023, Leicester in 2016, and Manchester United in 2007. Most recently, they give Liverpool their fifth guard of honour after the Reds clinched their 20th English top-flight title.
Liverpool, who secured the title with four matches to spare this season, will now receive their fifth guard of honour. Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, confirmed that his team will pay tribute to the champions before their upcoming match, recognizing Liverpool’s impressive achievement. Despite Chelsea’s ongoing struggles in securing a top-four finish this season, Maresca believes the team is making progress toward closing the gap with top-tier clubs like Liverpool.
While Chelsea’s recent performance has seen them battle for a UEFA Champions League spot, their acknowledgment of Liverpool’s success highlights the respect they have for their title-winning rivals. Maresca, aware of the significant difference in quality between the two sides, remains optimistic about Chelsea’s future progress under his leadership.
