Roberto Mancini Admits Regret Over Italy Exit, Open to National Team Return

Roberto Mancini has reflected on his decision to resign as head coach of the Italian national team in 2023, admitting that it was a mistake. After stepping down, he took charge of the Saudi Arabian national team, a role that lasted just over a year and ended with his dismissal in October 2024 after only 18 matches.
The former Italy, Inter Milan, and Manchester City manager explained that his departure stemmed from a series of misunderstandings with FIGC President Gabriele Gravina. He now believes the situation could have been resolved with clearer communication. Mancini acknowledged a breakdown in trust and admitted he failed to address his concerns directly, which ultimately led to his resignation.
With the Italian Football Federation currently searching for a new head coach following the dismissal of Luciano Spalletti, Mancini has expressed a willingness to return. He hinted at the possibility of rejoining the national team setup, potentially to help them qualify for the next World Cup or even guide them to another European Championship title.
Mancini’s self-reflection signals a potential reconciliation with the FIGC, especially given his past success, including leading Italy to victory at Euro 2020. His openness about past missteps and his expressed desire to return to the national stage suggest a renewed commitment, should the opportunity to coach Gli Azzurri arise once again.
