PSIS Semarang Faces Defeat to PSS Sleman, Struggles with Relegation Threat

In a crucial Liga 1 2024-25 match, PSIS Semarang fell to PSS Sleman 1-2 at home, increasing their chances of relegation. Both teams played aggressively from the start, with PSIS suffering an early setback when Sandy Ferizal was forced off with an injury after just five minutes. PSS took the lead in the seventh minute thanks to a strike from Gustavo Tocantins, and despite increased pressure from PSIS, they struggled to find the equalizer. The first half saw a brief stoppage due to a VAR review, resulting in a penalty for PSS, which Tocantins converted successfully to make it 2-0.
In the second half, PSIS made tactical changes, introducing Paulo Gali Freitas and Gustavo Moura e Souza, which paid off when Lucas Barreto scored in the 67th minute to narrow the gap to 1-2. However, despite some effort, PSIS couldn’t find a second goal, and the score remained unchanged until the final whistle. The loss left PSIS with only 25 points, and with just two matches left in the season, their survival hopes are slim. The best they can achieve is 31 points, which might not be enough to avoid relegation.
On the other hand, PSS Sleman’s victory moved them up to 17th place with 28 points, giving them a stronger chance of avoiding relegation. If they can maximize their remaining fixtures against Persija Jakarta and Madura United, they could secure their spot in Liga 1 for next season. The result highlighted the intense battle for survival, with both teams still facing critical matches ahead.
