Liverpool Close in on Premier League Title as Manchester United Suffer Heavy Defeat

It was a weekend of contrasting fortunes for two of England’s biggest football clubs. Liverpool continued their charge toward the Premier League title with a hard-fought victory, while Manchester United endured a punishing defeat on the road.
At Anfield, Liverpool secured a dramatic 2-1 win over West Ham United. The home side took an early lead through Luis Díaz, who found the net in the 18th minute after connecting with a pass from Mohamed Salah. Despite maintaining control for much of the match, Liverpool’s advantage slipped late when Andy Robertson accidentally scored an own goal in the 86th minute, leveling the score.
However, the deadlock didn’t last long. Just three minutes later, Virgil van Dijk rose to the occasion, scoring the winning goal from an Alexis Mac Allister assist. The Reds held on for the remaining moments to seal the crucial three points.
The result puts Liverpool firmly in the driver’s seat in the title race. With 76 points from 32 matches, they now enjoy a 13-point lead over second-placed Arsenal, who have 63. Based on current standings, Liverpool needs just two more wins to mathematically secure the league title. If they defeat Leicester City on April 20 and follow it up with a win against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on April 27, they could be crowned champions by the end of the month.
Meanwhile, Manchester United faced a nightmare outing at St. James' Park, falling 4-1 to Newcastle. The Magpies opened the scoring in the 24th minute through Sandro Tonali, assisted by Alexander Isak. United responded through Alejandro Garnacho in the 37th minute, briefly restoring parity. But after halftime, Newcastle took full control. Harvey Barnes scored twice, in the 49th and 64th minutes, before Bruno Guimarães added a fourth in the 77th, sealing a dominant performance.
Elsewhere, Chelsea played to a 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town, and Wolverhampton Wanderers claimed a 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur, further shaking up the league standings.
