The club made the announcement via their official Instagram account on the evening of January 6, 2025, welcoming Wakaso to the team with an enthusiastic message.

At 32 years old, Wakaso brings valuable international experience to Semen Padang FC. His arrival is seen as a significant boost to the team's midfield and a vital addition to their efforts in avoiding relegation from Liga 1.

Currently, Semen Padang sits 17th in the league standings with just 10 points from 17 matches, placing them at risk of falling into the relegation zone.

Before joining Semen Padang, Wakaso played for Greek club FC Lonikos Nikaia 1965 AC in the country’s second division. The midfielder has previously played for several European clubs, including Portimonense, Rio Ave, Lorient, Vitoria Guimaraes, Olympiakos Nikosia, and Leixoes.

Semen Padang FC has also made several other signings in the transfer window, including three foreign players—Filipe Chaby, Bruno Gomes, and Marco Baixinho—along with local additions Zidane Afandi and Ichsan Pratama.
