Shin Tae Yong's Achievements with Indonesia’s National Team

While Shin Tae Yong did not manage to secure any trophies during his tenure as head coach of Indonesia's national football team, his time in charge was marked by several notable accomplishments. Despite the lack of silverware, Shin’s tenure contributed significantly to Indonesia’s progress on the international stage.

Under Shin's leadership, the Indonesian national team reached the final of the 2020 AFF Championship, won a bronze medal at the 2021 SEA Games, and secured a runner-up finish in the 2023 AFF U-23 Championship. Although the team did not claim a major title, Shin succeeded in guiding them to qualification for several prestigious tournaments.



One of the standout achievements was securing a spot in the final rounds of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, the 2023 AFC U-20 Asian Cup, and the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup. At the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, Indonesia advanced to the group stage, marking their best performance in the competition since previous participations in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2007, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage.

In the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup, Indonesia’s U-23 team reached the semifinals, the furthest the country had advanced in the competition. Though they were narrowly defeated by Guinea in the intercontinental playoff for an Olympic spot, the team came closer than ever to qualifying for the Olympics since Indonesia's last appearance in 1956.

Additionally, Shin led the national team to qualification for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and helped Indonesia make significant progress in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they reached the third round. His efforts also saw the country improve its FIFA ranking, elevating Indonesia from 173rd place in December 2019 to 129th place.

Despite not securing a knockout spot in the 2024 AFF Championship, Shin's overall contributions to Indonesian football cannot be overlooked. His work with the national team helped lay the groundwork for future success on the international stage.
