Arsenal Signs Martin Zubimendi: A New Midfield Anchor for the Title Hunt
Arsenal has taken a major step to strengthen their squad for the 2025-26 season by signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for nearly £60 million. The Spanish defensive midfielder has agreed to a five-year contract and will wear the number 36 jersey. His arrival comes shortly after Arsenal secured goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, signaling the club’s serious ambition to compete for the Premier League title.
Zubimendi is well-known in European football, having made over 230 appearances for Real Sociedad. He is often compared to Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets due to his positional intelligence, calmness under pressure, and ability to control the tempo of the game. Despite not having the tallest stature, his technical skills and vision make him a valuable asset, especially following the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho.
The midfielder’s international experience adds to his appeal. He played a role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph and scored in the UEFA Nations League final last season. While Real Sociedad finished mid-table, Zubimendi’s consistent performances attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Liverpool. However, Arsenal’s project and the influence of manager Mikel Arteta convinced him to move to the Premier League.
Alongside Zubimendi, Arsenal is also close to signing Christian Norgaard from Brentford, aiming to boost depth and versatility in midfield.
