Iran Faces Possible World Cup 2026 Ban, What It Means for Indonesia’s National Team

Iran has secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup by winning their group in the Asian qualifiers, but their participation is now uncertain due to geopolitical tensions. The country’s ongoing conflict with Israel, an ally of the United States, has resulted in Iran being placed on a U.S. blacklist, restricting Iranian nationals from entering American territory. Since the U.S. will co-host the World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, this raises concerns about Iran’s ability to compete.
FIFA is reportedly negotiating with the U.S. government to allow the Iranian team to participate in the tournament despite travel restrictions. There are exceptions for athletes and officials under certain conditions, but Iranian fans may still face difficulties obtaining visas to attend matches. This complex situation casts doubt over Iran’s presence at the World Cup.
For Indonesia’s national team, this development could have significant implications. Should Iran be disqualified, FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation might reallocate their spot, potentially increasing the number of qualifying slots in the upcoming final round of Asian qualifiers. Indonesia, currently battling for one of two remaining spots in the last qualifying stage, stands to benefit from any additional berth made available.
Regardless of Iran’s fate, the Indonesian team must maintain focus and preparation for the critical matches scheduled between October 8 and 14, 2025, in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The uncertain situation adds an extra layer of motivation and opportunity as they compete against five other nations for a chance to make history by reaching the World Cup.
