Luis de la Fuente Signs Contract Extension with Spain Until 2028

Luis de la Fuente will remain as Spain's head coach until 2028, following a contract extension announced by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Monday. His original contract was set to expire after the 2026 World Cup, but the new deal will see him lead the team through the 2028 European Championship, where Spain will aim to defend the title they won last year.
De la Fuente, 63, expressed his excitement and emotional connection to the role, emphasizing that he feels completely at home with the team. He revealed that he never considered leaving and is focused on continuing Spain's success. The coach highlighted the importance of a constant drive for improvement and a mentality centered around winning, noting that the team’s success is built on unity and the idea that everyone plays a vital role.
Taking over from Luis Enrique in December 2022 after Spain’s early exit from the World Cup, De la Fuente had previously managed the under-21 side and led the Olympic team to a silver medal in Tokyo in 2022. Under his leadership, Spain won the 2023 Nations League and secured their fourth European Championship title at Euro 2024.
Spain’s next match will be in March, when they face the Netherlands in the Nations League quarterfinals.
