Greece
Ivan Jovanovic has not made many changes to the squad he picked in the October international break, with only two players missing out this month. Andreas Bouchalakis and Anastasios Chatzigiovanis are not a part of the group.

Odysseas Vlachodimos is an automatic pick between the stick, with Greece lining up in a 4-2-3-1 formation in front of him vs England on Thursday. The backline should feature Lazaros Rota, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Konstantinos Koulierakis, and Kostas Tsimikas.

As for the midfield unit, Manolis Siopis and Petros Mantalos should pair up in the double pivot, looking to keep things tight in the middle of the park. The productive Anastasios Bakasetas will reprise the no. 10 role, with Georgios Masouras and Christos Tzolis being the two wide attackers. Finally, there is no looking past Vangelis Pavlidis as the central striker.

England
Unlike his counterpart in the Greek dugout, Lee Carsley has made several alterations to the squad he picked in the October international break. In addition, many players have withdrawn from the group due to fitness issues.

Carsley did not call up Nick Pope, John Stones, and Eberechi Eze before Trent Alexander-Arnold, Levi Colwill, Declan Rice, Phil Foden, Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, Jack Grealish, and Bukayo Saka pulled out from the squad due to their fitness issues.

Jordan Pickford will take his spot between the sticks, with England lining up in a 4-2-3-1 formation in front of him vs Greece on Thursday. The backline should feature Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, and Rico Lewis, with Kyle Walker the preferred choice for the right-back berth and Valentino Livramento his deputy if the veteran full-back is not fit enough to start.

As for the midfield unit, Rice’s absence means Angel Gomes and Conor Gallagher should pair up in the double pivot. Jude Bellingham will reprise the no. 10 role, with Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke being the two wide attackers. Finally, captain Harry Kane will lead the line for England against Greece this week.

Greece vs England Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
Greece's upset win over England at Wembley last month was their first-ever victory over the Three Lions, and it was a relatively dominant one too. They put the ball into the net five times, only to see three goals chalked off.

This match promises to be a strange one for England, as interim manager Lee Carsley remains in charge, despite Thomas Tuchel being announced as the side's new permanent boss last month. Reportedly, Tuchel - who will start his new job in January - has not been involved with this squad at all.

Arguably, the managerial situation has played a part in the withdrawal of an unprecedented eight players from the England squad. Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Aaron Ramsdale, Cole Palmer, Levi Colwill and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all pulled out, and have been replaced by Morgan Rogers, Jarrod Bowen, Jarrad Branthwaite, James Trafford and Tino Livramento.

Despite their failure to qualify for Euro 2024 in the summer, Greece have enjoyed a relatively successful year. They have won six of their eight matches, with the only defeat coming at the hands of Germany.

England did bounce back from their defeat to Greece last month with a solid win over Finland in Helsinki. However, they will need to win here by at least three goals to overtake Greece at the top of this group - and the Greeks have conceded just once thus far

Greece possible starting lineup:
Vlachodimos; Rota, Mavropanos, Koulierakis, Tsimikas; Siopis, Mantalos; Masouras, Bakasetas, Tzolis; Pavlidis

England possible starting lineup:
Pickford; Walker, Konsa, Guehi, Lewis; Gomes, Gallagher; Madueke, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane

Prediction: Greece 1-2 England
The pressure is on Carsley to steer England to an important victory and the onus will be on his team to take the game to Greece, who have impressed on home soil and have made themselves difficult to break down in front of their own supporters. England may be without several star players who Carsley would have liked to have selected in his side for this fixture, but he still has a wealth of talent at his disposal and if he names a less-experimental side that includes Kane leading the line, then the Three Lions should just about get the job done in Athens.
